My biggest issue with the game early on (that I sometimes found myself answering kanji by the order they were taught rather than understanding of them, since each lesson had 5 and each row of answers had 5) resolves itself later on, especially in lessons that have >5 kanji. The columns begin to no longer line up in exact clumps and there's a lot more having to find the right answer. I chose the hard level since I played previous entries in the series, but I don't really find it helpful. There are multiple pronunciations to each kanji, and I find the kun'omi vs on'omi (I believe) pronunciations confusing and mostly unexplained. Overall though, an enjoyable way to learn that goes beyond just studying a page over and over. That said, the lesson->dungeon->lesson->invasion->repeat cycle is painful.. Want to have something to show for all the time you spend playing computer games?Well, if you'd like put to use all those reward-paths you've burned into your brain determining the best attacks to use against JRPG monsters, this little game gives you a perfect opportunity. It plays just like a classic JRPG, and does a decent job of it.It has some other nice touches as well, including the (somewhat basic) village-building mechanic, which goes a little ways to scratch the "progress" or "order-from-chaos" itch, as well as giving you some context for some of the kanji you're learning. If this could be played up a little more, to give you more applications for your growing knowledge, that would add to the game even more.I literally laughed out loud when they introduced the absurdly earnest fiction, although some may find its banality tiresome. It's possible that with a talented writer this could be played up for ironic laughs, which would be a nice break from the fact that you're basically doing homework. So, if you're bemused by the fact that playing Ultima V all those years ago gave you that expertise in Elder Futhark that you still remember but have literally NEVER put to use, try this game. Kanji's a lot more handy.I'd actually love it if Steam could increase its library of educational titles like this, where you come away with some knowledge that is explicitly valuable outside the context of the game. More please!
